About Dr. Irving

Dr. Merrill Irving, Jr. is a visionary leader with an accomplished record of serving diverse learning communities championing underserved and nontraditional students. As president of Hennepin Technical College (HTC), Dr. Irving is the chief executive officer responsible for leading the administration, faculty and staff in fulfilling the college’s mission. Dr. Irving serves as a member of the Minnesota Governor’s Workforce Development Board, Minnesota Young Women’s Initiative Council, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Leadership Council, Chair of the Metro Alliance Presidents Council, the Hennepin County Workforce Leadership Council, and is on the board of directors for the Brooklyn Bridge Alliance for Youth. In addition, Dr. Irving cultivates strategic partnerships with local K-12 Superintendents and industry leaders in an effort to expand college to career pathways, curriculum alignment, and access.

Dr. Irving’s national roles include the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) President Academy Executive Committee and AACC Commission on Academic, Student and Community Development. He is also a member of the American Council on Education (ACE), National Council for Workforce Education (NCWE), National Council on Black American Affairs (NCBAA), and National Council of Continuing Education and Training (NCCET).
